25 March 2014 Gathering evidence from children and young people in child sexual abuse cases - exploring agency and professional perspectives


A panel discussion chaired by Judge Anne Demack of the Federal Circuit Court with Detective Sergeant Angela McCarthy (Queensland Police Service), Ms Toni Cash (Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services), Dr Catherine Skellern (Paediatrician Royal Childrens Hospital Brisbane) and Dr Nina Westera (Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security, Griffith University).

This panel explored the difficulties and challenges in gathering, responding and assessing evidence from children and young people in child sexual abuse cases.

24 June 2014 Future Directions in Queensland Child Protection-A Q & A Session with Mr Michael Hogan, Director General, Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services

A presentation with a Q & A session chaired by Her Honour Justice Margaret McMurdo, President of the Court of Appeal and delivered by Mr Michael Hogan the newly appointed Director General. This presentation explored the Department's response to the recent Queensland Child Protection Commission of Inquiry (QCPCI) report recommendations and the future directions for child protection in Queensland.

18 Nov 2014 New Oversight Arrangements-Role, Operations, Priorities

A presentation, chaired by His Honour Chief Justice Tim Carmody, Supreme Court of Queensland jointly delivered by Mr Steve Armitage, Acting Principal Commissioner from the Family and Child Commission and Mr Kevin Martin, the Public Guardian, from the Office of the Public Guardian. This presentation explains the role, operations and priorities for these two agencies.

The Office of the Public Guardian  is the new statutory body responsible for protecting the rights of vulnerable adults with impaired decision making capacity, children and young people in the child protection system, and young people in detention.
The Family & Child Commission will provide oversight on the progress of the government’s child protection reform agenda and aims to promote the safety, wellbeing and best interests of children and young people, promote and advocate the responsibility of families and communities to protect and care for children and young people, and improve the child protection system
.
